DOLL TERMS BY THE DOZEN

  • Be'be': French child doll with a "dolly face".

  • Belton-type: A bald bisque head with one, two or three small holes for attaching a wig or stringing the body.

  • Brevete' or Bte': Used on French dolls to indicate that the patent is registered.

  • Contemporary clothes: Clothes not original to the doll, but dating from the same period when the doll would have been played with.

  • Embossed mark: Raised letters, numbers or names on the backs of heads or bodies.

  • Incised mark: Letters, numbers or names impressed into the bisque on the back of the head or on the shoulder plate.

  • Mohair: Goat's hair often used in making doll wigs.

  • Molded hair: Curls, waves and comb marks which are part of the head mold and not only painted onto the head.

  • Shoulder head: A doll's head and shoulders all in one piece.

  • Shoulder plate: The actual shoulder portion sometimes molded in one with the head and sometimes a separate piece with a socket where the head is inserted.

  • Socket head: Head and neck which fit into an opening in the shoulder plate or the directly onto the body.

  • Solid-dome head: Head with no crown opening. It could have painted hair or be covered by a wig.

  • Turned shoulder head: Head and shoulders which are one piece, but the head is molded at an angle so the doll is not looking straight ahead.
